Rik Pierce Class - Day 5

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Homework Homework 2 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Variations Finishing Up

Today we spent at least the first two or more hours painting our exterior house and landscaping.
After the paint was dry to touch, we went to work laying down the first layer of landscaping using simple white glue (dries clear) and generously sprinkling the landscaping materials (pictured) on top. I used a lawn green as well as a darker olive color in my landscaping, at times mixing the two colors.

You may notice that the front step is a different color than yesterday! After many attempts to tone down the color, Rik suggested that I might just glue another piece of paperclay over the entire step and repaint it! I like it much better now and will probably wash it with a light gray later.
Here is a side view of the landscaping materials. After the glue sets for about an hour we will gently sweep away the loose extra materials (and save it for later use). We will also brush down the foliage with a solution of white glue (70 percent white glue to 30 percent water) at the end of the day. This will make the foliage longer lasting, plus it will be infinitely easier to glue other landscaping materials, flowers, foliage on top of it once the top coat is dry.
Here you see some small clusters of plants hand made from much larger pieces - eventually we will drill holes into the paperclay/foam to glue in our foliage.
Here you see Rik demonstrating how to begin constructing the vine work that will grow up the sides of our cottage. There will be three main branches in this particular vine, one that goes to the right along the bottom of the roof line over the front door, one that will go straight up to the very top of the roof line, and one that will go to the left and cling on top of the bay window.

Rik is demonstrating this on Robin's house - note the different choices in rock and stone work as well as a slightly different tone of colors. Each house now looks very individualistic!

Here's my vine creeping (propped for now) up the side of the house and over the chimney. It will be painted tomorrow with a thick paint and then later draped and secured onto the cottage. (The mossy ground covering has just been wetted down with the white glue solution so it looks a bit dark and matted in these two photos).

Here is the view of the vine on the other side of the house.
