English Tudor Cottage

Rik Pierce Class - Day 1

June 2001

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Homework Homework 2 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Variations Finishing Up

Having never built a miniature home before, I simply didn't know where to start. When saw a class to build the "English Cottage", taught by Rik Pierce at Shellie's Miniature Mania I jumped at the chance. The idea of building a complete miniature home over the course of two weekends (but with lots of homework) appealed to me. But what really sold me is Rik's fantastical, beautiful and inspiring miniature homes and buildings.

The first day of the class ran about 9 hours (including lunch). Here is the work space at Shellie's Miniature Mania in San Carlos, CA. I don't think we'll ever see these tables this clean again!

Here is an interior shot of the class model made by Rik. He has put in a half loft - but I am planning on putting up a full length upper floor to allow more room for furniture. More pictures of the class model: large photo of exterior front, another shot of the loft, a great picture of the bay window, side shot of the chimney

A close-up of the newly painted fireplace! We used Delta Ceramcoat's Raw Linen for the base coat and Brown Iron Oxide for the body of the brickwork. Then we used a wash of Tangerine and Hippo Gray to add depth to the bricks.

The fireplace surround is a resin cast by Rik Pierce.

Here is the first floor in progress. It has been scored and next we'll be adding wooden "nails" before staining.

The floor is stained with Minwax Provincial. You can see the wooden "nails" in the lower right hand corner of the floor..

The shell is made of 1/2 inch thick foam core. The window frames and door frame are made of cast resin.

Today's class is over and Boris is going to stay behind to finish up the last of the timber work. The wood is distressed using a homemade "saws-all" tool to chew up the wood and then it is stained with Minwax Provincial.
